Stereo and Immersive Media — 2015 International Conference aims to bring together researchers, artists and archivists working visual media renowned for their stereoscopic and/or immersive features.

Stereo and immersive media environments have been providing an expanded field for photographic media since the 19th century.

The recent revival of interest in stereo and immersive technologies has set an opportunity to research its historical roots and also the present-day challenges to visual culture.


Abstracts Submission

Abstracts of between 200 and 300 words should be submitted along with a brief biography, to https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=simedia2015

  • Full papers submission: October 1

Paper Submission

  • Papers of 3500-6000 words should be submitted also through Easychair.
  • Best papers will be considered for publication in a special issue of the International Journal of Film and Media Arts.

Call for Proposals

Stereo and Immersive Media- 2015 International Conference aims to bring together researchers, artists and archivists working visual media renowned for their stereoscopic and/or immersive features. Stereo and immersive media environments have been providing an expanded field to photographic media since the 19th century. The recent revival of interest in stereo and immersive technologies has set an opportunity to research its historical roots and also the present-day challenges to visual culture.

This conference welcomes a diversity of approaches and topics that may contribute to the critical understanding of the stereo and immersive media today. Suggested research topics for contributions include:

  1. Stereoscopic photography;
  2. Stereo photography, archival and curatorial practices;
  3. Immersive cinematic media;
  4. Scientific stereoscopic practices;
  5. Immersive media art installations;
  6. Videogames and augmented realities;
  7. Haptic and visual media cultures;

Stereo and immersive media environments have been providing an expanded field to photographic media since the 19th century. The recent revival of interest in stereo and immersive technologies has set an opportunity to research its historical roots and also the present-day challenges to visual culture.

Stereo and Immersive Media- 2015 International Conference will present in its opening plenary session the final results of the research project Stereo Visual Culture dedicated to the first national study of stereo photography in Portugal. The conference venue, the National Archive of Torre do Tombo, will host the exhibition ‘The Third Image — Stereoscopic Photography in Portugal and the Desire for 3D’, presenting the main authors, themes and compositions from 31 stereo collections of 9 national Portuguese archives and museums.

Specialist in Media Aesthetics, Media Art Theory and Cultural Techniques.
Thomas Weynants
Specialist in Early & Popular Visual Media. Author of the website ‘Early Visual Media Archaeology’ (TBC).

Venue

The conference will take place at Torre do Tombo Portuguese National Archive and Lusófona University (ULHT). The conference includes a special guided tour to the conservation and restoration areas of Torre do Tombo.

Getting to Lisbon Lisboa

  • Air Lisboa International Airport is 7km from the city centre and operates daily flights to and from major cities worldwide. Lisboa Airport has two terminals. Terminal 1 is for International Departures and Domestic Arrivals. Terminal 2 is for Domestic Departures only.
  • Aerobus Carris Aerobus no. 91 operates a regular service from the Airport to the city centre. The time table runs from 07:45 until 20:15 every 20 minutes.
